Gear for the Eastern Cape Veld

The key to a comfortable safari in the Eastern Cape is layering. Early mornings in the mountains can be freezing, while the Smaldeel plains can get quite warm by noon.

Clothing (Recommended Colours: Dark Khaki, Olive, or Brown)

Induku offers daily laundry services, so you only need about 3 sets of hunting clothes.

  • 3x Hunting Shirts: Long-sleeved (for sun/thorn protection) and short-sleeved.
  • 3x Hunting Trousers (Short & Long): Durable, quiet fabric. Avoid heavy denim.
  • 1x Lightweight Jacket: Windproof and water-resistant for early morning drives.
  • 1x Heavy Fleece or Down Jacket: Essential for mountain hunts and winter mornings (May–August).
  • 1x Set of Thermal Underwear: Vital for those high-altitude mountain stalks.
  • 1x Pair of Well-Broken-In Boots: Medium-weight, quiet soles. Do not bring brand-new boots; break them in at least a month before arrival.
  • 1x Pair of Gators: To keep grass seeds and “duiveltjies” (thorns) out of your socks.
  • 5x Pairs of High-Quality Wool Socks: Like Smartwool or Bridgedale.
  • Evening Wear: Casual, comfortable clothes for around the fire (jeans, sweater, and loafers).

Personal Gear & Accessories

  • Wide-Brimmed Hat or Cap: Essential for the African sun.
  • Gloves and a Beanie: For cold mornings on the back of the cruiser.
  • Polarised Sunglasses: To help with spotting game.
  • Binoculars: 8×42 or 10×42 are ideal for varied terrain.
  • Hunting Knife: Must be packed in checked luggage; knives are strictly prohibited in carry-on bags.
  • Small Daypack: To carry water, sunscreen, and your camera.

Health & Protection

  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+) and Lip Balm: The African sun is deceptively strong.
  • Insect Repellent: Ticks and flies can be present.
  • Personal Medications: Bring an ample supply of any prescriptions.
  • Basic First Aid: Blister pads (moleskin), ibuprofen, and anti-diarrheals.

Hunting Equipment & Ammunition Logistics

  • Rifle & Hard Travel Case: Must be airline-approved and lockable.
  • Soft Rifle Bag: For protection while in the hunting vehicle.
  • Ammunition: 40-60 rounds.
    • Weight Limit: Most airlines limit ammunition to 5 kg (11 lbs) total weight including the container.
    • Domestic vs. International: On international flights, ammo is often allowed inside your locked rifle case. However, for South African domestic flights (e.g., Joburg or Cape Town to Port Elizabeth), your ammunition must be in a separate, dedicated lockable ammo box. Ammunition is never allowed inside the rifle itself.
  • Ammunition Pouch: Belt-mounted for easy access during stalks.
  • Rangefinder: (Optional, as your PH will have one).

Electronics & Admin

  • Universal Travel Adapter: South Africa uses Type M (three round pins) and Type N.
  • Power Bank: For long days in the veld.
  • Camera: With a good zoom lens (minimum 200mm–300mm).
  • Documents: Passport, flight itinerary, and firearm import permit.

Pro-Tip from JJ

“Travel in your hunting boots. They are the heaviest item in your luggage, so wearing them saves weight. Also, remember that while your ammo stays in your rifle case for the long-haul flight, keep that separate locked ammo box handy for the local connection to PE.”
